The kitchen used to be walled off from the rest of the house, and the family ate standing at the counter more often than they sat down together. Opening the space gave them something they were missing: a place to cook, eat, work, entertain, and simply be together.

Coming home as an adult can mean something different when your parents are getting older. They wanted to be close enough to be there for them, without giving up the independence of a life and space of their own. The lower level made both possible: a place to work, unwind, welcome guests, and feel completely at home, with family just upstairs, and a way for their parents to stay in the home they love with support close by.

A finished basement that's efficient without feeling cramped, clean lines with plenty of usable space.

The beach house was already a place the family loved. The question was how to make room for more of life to happen there. A new second floor gave adult children, grandchildren, and the dogs room to come and stay, with bedrooms, a full bath, laundry, and living space of their own. More than adding square footage, the renovation gave the family a home that can keep bringing everyone back together for years to come.
